Eric Clapton - "Layla" live

Email Article | One of the greatest love songs ever written. I was lucky enough to see him 6 nights on this tour in 1985, 2 in Los Angeles, 1 in San Diego, 2 in San Francisco and 1 in Tucson. Every night was simply brilliant.
Inspired by the story, "Layla and Majnun" by the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, the song was written by Eric Clapton as a love song to his best friends wife. The best friend was George Harrison of the Beatles, the wife was Pattie Boyd, and apparently it worked. Clapton played the song for Pattie the first time in 1973, then confessed his love for her to both she and George Harrison. Even though the two remained friends, and Harrison and Boyd remained married for several years, in 1977, Pattie left Harrison and went on tour with Clapton, marrying him in Tucson, Arizona in 1978.
Clapton went on to write a number of songs for Boyd, the second most famous behind Layla is the classic "Wonderful Tonight". Boyd and Clapton remained married, through a number of affairs on his part and at least two children by other women, until 1988, when they finally divorced. Clapton to this day still claims Boyd to be the one true love of his life.
